readは古英語rǣdan（助言する→読む）、offは古英語of（離れて）。「文字を読んで声として放つ」が原義で、リストや数値を一つずつ声に出して読み上げる意味。関連語：readout（計器の読み取り値）、offhand（手元から離す→即座に）。rǣdanは本来「解釈する」意味で、riddle（謎）も同根。
