endowment は endow＋ -ment で、endow はアングロ＝フランス語 endouer を経て、ラテン語 dotare「贈り物・持参金を与える」にさかのぼります。もとは「財産を与えて備える」感覚なので、組織を支える寄付金の意味になり、dowry や dower と同じ根です。
