result はラテン語 resultare「跳ね返る」に由来し、re-「後ろへ」＋ saltare「跳ぶ」からできています。そこに in が加わり、『跳ね返った先としてある結果に入る』感覚から「〜をもたらす」という意味になりました。関連語は salient, assault。
Result comes from Latin resultare, meaning "to spring back" or "rebound," from re- "back" and saltare "to jump." In English, the idea moved from a thing that comes back from an action to the outcome produced by it. Result in then developed the sense of "lead to" or "bring about."
