解説 Definition
統計や研究で、ある結果が起こるかどうか、またはどの程度起こりそうかを見積もる手がかりになる要因や変数を指す語。医療・教育・経済などで、将来の傾向や成果との関連を分析するときによく使われる。
A predictor is a sign, factor, or piece of information that helps show what may happen in the future. It is common in science, medicine, statistics, and data analysis. A predictor does not guarantee a result, but it helps estimate one.

predict が分かれば predictor は「予測するもの・予測に使うもの」。-or は actor, creator などと同じ「〜する人／もの」なので、まず predict + -or で切る。日常語というより統計・研究でよく出て、a strong predictor of success, risk, outcome の形で覚えると使いやすい。indicator は単なる指標や兆候にも広く使えるが、predictor は「その先の結果をかなり見積もる手がかり」という含みが強い。predictor variable もセットで覚えると定着しやすい。

predictor は pre-「前もって」+ dict「言う」+ -or「〜するもの」から成り、ラテン語 praedicere「前もって言う」が語源です。芯の意味は「先に言い当てるもの」で、predict や dictionary に同じ dict-「言う」が見えると、予測の働きが見えてきます。
Built from predict and the agent ending -or, meaning "one that predicts." Predict comes from Latin praedicere, from prae- "before" and dicere "to say." The original idea is "to say beforehand," which later became the sense of a person or thing that tells in advance; dictionary comes from the same dicere root.
