覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「ドラマ」より範囲が広く、テレビ作品だけでなく舞台の「劇」、劇文学、深刻な物語作品も指す。watch a drama は映像作品、study drama は演劇を学ぶという意味になりやすい。comedy と対比して、笑い中心ではない物語を思い浮かべると区別しやすい。
Do not limit drama to the Japanese idea of a television series. In English, it can be a stage play, a serious film or television story, or the art and study of theater itself. Use the surrounding verb as a clue: watch a drama usually refers to a particular production, while study drama often means learning acting or theater. Contrast it with comedy: a drama generally emphasizes serious characters, conflict, and emotional development rather than humor as its main purpose.

drama の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語drama(行為・演劇)から直接借用。語根dran(行う・実行する)に由来し、「舞台上で演じられる行為」が原義。古代ギリシャの演劇文化とともに広まった。関連語:dramatic(劇的な)、drastic(思い切った=強く行動する)。
Drama comes from Greek drama, meaning “a deed, action, or play,” derived from dran, “to do or act.” The word reflects the idea of actions being performed before an audience. It entered English through Latin usage associated with theatrical works. Dramatic is a close derivative, while drastic is historically connected through Greek drastikos, “effective or active,” although its modern meaning has developed differently.
