解説 Definition
television は、テレビ、またはテレビ放送という意味です。日本語の「テレビ」とほぼ同じですが、機械そのものにも番組・放送にも使われます。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
television は tele-「遠く」と vision「見ること・視覚」の組み合わせで、「遠くの映像を見る仕組み」と分解できます。watch television は番組・放送を見ること、turn on the television は受像機をつけることです。日本語の「テレビ」より語が長いだけでなく、機械と放送の両方を指す点を文脈で捉えましょう。
Break television into tele-, meaning “at a distance,” and vision, meaning “sight” or “seeing.” The whole word therefore suggests seeing images sent from far away. Remember its two common uses through collocations: watch television usually means watch programs or broadcasts, while turn on the television usually refers to the physical set. On television means broadcast or shown through that medium. Although Japanese テレビ comes from this word, English speakers do not normally shorten television to terebi; they may informally say TV instead.
例文

television の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 tele(遠く)とラテン語 visio(見ること)の合成語。「遠くを見る装置」が原義。telephone(遠くの音)やvision(視覚)と同根。20世紀初頭の造語で、ギリシャ語とラテン語の混成が特徴的。
Television combines the Greek-derived element tele-, “far off” or “at a distance,” with vision, from Latin visio, “sight” or “the act of seeing.” Coined around the beginning of the twentieth century, it is a hybrid formation using elements from two classical languages. The name describes technology that makes distant scenes visible. The same tele- appears in telephone, while vision is related to visible and visual.
