覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
このエントリの riverine は、別にある基本義「川の」よりも、場所や生活圏が川に沿っていることを表す用法として覚えます。river に -ine が付いた形で、riverine village, riverine community, riverine forest のように、集落・森林・生態系が川の近くに広がる感じです。単なる near the river より書き言葉・地理や環境説明で硬めに響きます。
Keep the simple word `river` in the center of your memory. The ending `-ine` turns it into an adjective, so `riverine` means related to rivers. If `marine` is about the sea, `riverine` is about river areas, especially in geography or nature.

riverine の語源・成り立ち Etymology
riverine は river + -ine「〜に関する」ですが、river 自体は古フランス語 riviere、さらにラテン語 ripa「川岸」に由来します。riparian や Riviera も同根で、水そのものより元は「岸辺」の語。だから riverine には「川沿いの」という地形的な響きがあります。
Riverine is built from river and the suffix -ine, meaning "connected with." River came through Old French riviere and is linked to Latin ripa, meaning "riverbank" or "shore." Because of that history, riverine often carries the sense of being along a river as well as simply belonging to one; related words include riparian and Riviera.
