服やかばんなどについているボタンが、穴や留め具に通されて閉じられている状態を表します。シャツやコートの前が開いていないで、きちんと留まっている様子に使います。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
buttoned は button「ボタン」に、完了した状態を示す -ed が付き、「ボタンが穴に通され、服が閉じている」と捉えると簡単です。開いたシャツではなく、襟元まで一つずつ留めた姿を思い浮かべましょう。be buttoned は「留まっている」、wear a shirt buttoned to the collar は「襟まで留めた状態で着る」です。buttoned up や buttoned all the way up なら「上まで全部留めた」が明確になります。unbuttoned「ボタンを外した」と対にすると状態の違いも定着しやすいです。
