物事の違いや特徴を際立たせて他と区別すること。多くは競争の中で独自性を示すために行われる。生物学では幹細胞などが特定の働きを担うようになる過程、数学では関数の変化の割合を求める操作も含まれる。

differentiation はラテン語 differentia を経て、dif-/dis-（離れて）+ ferre（運ぶ）という発想を含みます。difference や transfer と同じ fer- をもち、「別々に運び分ける」感覚から「区別すること・差別化」へつながりました。
`Differentiation` comes from Latin `differentia`, built on the idea of carrying things apart or making them separate.
