Individuation is the process of becoming a separate and distinct individual with your own identity. It can describe personal development in psychology, or the way someone becomes less dependent on a group or another person. The word is fairly formal and is often used in academic or psychological discussions.

ラテン語 individuatio に由来。in-（不）+ dividuus（分割できる）+ -ation（行為）で「これ以上分割できないものにする過程」が原義。語根 dividere（分ける）は individual（個人）や indivisible（不可分の）と共通。分けられない一つの存在として自己を確立する意味が「個性化」につながった。
Individuation comes from Latin individuatio, based on the idea of something that cannot be divided further. The root is related to dividere, meaning "to divide," also seen in individual and indivisible. Over time, it came to mean the process of becoming a distinct, separate person or identity.
