Heterotrophic describes living things that cannot make their own food and must get energy from other organisms. Animals, fungi, and many bacteria are heterotrophic. This is a biology term, often used when comparing them with plants.

まず対義語の autotrophic とセットで覚えるのが最短です。auto- は「自分で」、hetero- は heterogeneous などと同じく「異なる・他から」。trophic は trophic level（栄養段階）にも出る「栄養の」なので、heterotrophic で「自分では作らず、外から栄養を得る」と取れます。植物の多くは autotrophic、動物や菌類は heterotrophic、という典型例と一緒に置くと定着しやすいです。
