parasitic はギリシャ語 parasitos にさかのぼり、para-「そばで」+ sitos「食べ物」が原義で、ラテン語・フランス語を経て英語化した。parasite や parasitism と同根で、「他人の食卓に添って食べる者」という像から、宿主に頼る寄生の意味が生まれた。
