commensal は中世ラテン語 commensalis に由来し、com-「共に」+ mensa「食卓」+ -al から成ります。commensalism や mesa も縁語で、元は「同じ卓を囲むこと」なので、片利共生にも“相手の席を借りて生きる”感じが残ります。
Commensal comes from Medieval Latin commensalis, from com- "together" and mensa "table." It first meant sharing a table or eating together. From that image, the biological sense developed for organisms that live alongside another and benefit without harming it. A related word is commensalism.
