Mensa is a small, faint constellation in the far southern sky, named after Table Mountain in South Africa. It lies near part of the Large Magellanic Cloud and is best observed from the Southern Hemisphere.

The constellation name Mensa comes directly from Latin mensa, meaning “table.” The French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille introduced it in the eighteenth century as Mons Mensae, “Table Mountain,” honoring the mountain overlooking Cape Town, near where he made observations of the southern sky. The name was later shortened to Mensa. The organization called Mensa independently uses the same Latin noun, but it is not the source of the constellation’s name.
