A parasitoid is an insect or other small animal that lives on or inside another living thing and eventually kills it. This word is mainly used in biology, especially when talking about certain wasps, flies, and their relationship with host insects.

parasitoid は Greek para-「そばに」+ sitos「食物」から来た parasite に、-oid「〜のような」が付いた語です。parasitic と同じ核をもち、asteroid と同じ -oid だと分かると、「寄生虫のように宿主を利用するもの」という像がつかめます。
Parasitoid was formed from parasite plus the ending -oid, meaning "like" or "resembling." Parasite comes through Latin and French from Greek roots meaning "beside" and "food," while -oid is the same ending seen in words like asteroid. So parasitoid originally meant something parasite-like, and later became a more exact scientific term.
