Hungering means feeling hunger or wanting food. It can also mean strongly wanting something in a more figurative way, such as success, love, or change. The word is more expressive than simply saying "wanting."

hungeringはhungerに-ingが付いた形です。hungerは古英語hungor「飢え」←ゲルマン祖語*hungrazにさかのぼり、まず身体の飢え、そこから「強く求める」に広がりました。hungryも同根です。
Hungering is hunger with the ending -ing. Hunger comes from Old English hungor, from an older Germanic root meaning "hunger" or "want." It first referred to physical need for food, then widened to mean a strong desire for anything; hungry is from the same root.
