Asbestosis is a serious lung disease caused by breathing in asbestos dust over a long time. It damages the lungs and makes breathing more difficult. The term is mainly used in medicine and workplace health discussions.

asbestosis はギリシア語 asbestos「消えない・燃え尽きない」に、病態を示す接尾辞 -osis が付いた語です。石綿が火でも消えにくい性質からその名がつき、そこから「石綿が原因の病気」へと意味が伸びました。関連語は asbestos, silicosis です。
Asbestosis is formed from asbestos + -osis, a suffix used for medical conditions. Asbestos comes from Greek asbestos, meaning "inextinguishable" or "unquenchable," because the material does not burn easily.
