individual を知っていれば、まず核は「個人・個別」。そこに -ly が付いて「個別に／一人ずつ／別々に」の副詞になる。collectively や together が「まとまりとして」なのに対し、individually は「一つずつ別の単位として見る」感覚。treat students individually, individually wrapped, sold individually のような形でよく出る。separately に近いが、ただ離れているというより「各対象を個別扱いする」点が大事。なお respectively は順番の対応を示す語で、individually とは役割が違う。

individually は individual と -ly から成り、individual はラテン語 individuus「分けられない」に由来します。in-「否定」+ dividere「分ける」の形で、divide や division も同根なので、『切り分けず一つとして扱う』ことから『個別に』の感覚が生まれます。
Individually comes from individual plus -ly. Individual goes back to Latin individuus, meaning indivisible or not able to be split, from in- "not" and dividere "to divide."
