infantry はフランス語 infanterie を経て、ラテン語 infans「まだ話せない子」につながります。in-「ない」+ fari「話す」から成り、若い者・下位の者が徒歩で戦う兵を指したため「歩兵」になりました。関連語は infant, infancy。
Infantry came into English through French infanterie and is related to Latin infans, meaning "child" or literally "one not speaking yet." That Latin word is built from in- "not" and fari "to speak," also seen in infant and infancy. The meaning shifted from "young or lower-ranking people" to soldiers who fought on foot.
