解説 Definition
大砲や自走砲、ロケット砲などの大型火器の総称、またはそれらを運用する砲兵部隊を指す語。戦場では遠距離から敵を攻撃したり、味方の前進を支援したりする役割を担い、兵器そのものと兵科の両方の意味で使われる。
Artillery is a group of large weapons, such as big guns, used in war. It is also used for the military unit that operates these weapons. This is mainly a military and historical term.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず「artillery fire」「field artillery」「heavy artillery」のまとまりで覚えると定着しやすい語です。point は「個々の銃」ではなく、大砲・ロケット砲のような重火器全体、またはその部隊を指すこと。兵士そのものなら soldier / gunner、歩兵なら infantry。戦場では infantry が前に出て、artillery が後方から遠距離支援する、という役割の対比で覚えると混同しにくいです。比喩で bring in the heavy artillery と言えば「切り札を投入する」にもなります。

artillery の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「artillery」は古フランス語 artillerie、さらに artillier「武器を備える」に由来し、ラテン語 ars「技術」の気配もある語です。artillerist と同根で、ただの大砲でなく「技巧をこらした戦の装置」だった名残が、重火器の語感に残っています。
From Old French artillerie, from artillier, meaning "to equip with weapons" or "prepare war machinery." The word was first used for military equipment and engines in general, not only guns. Over time, it narrowed to heavy weapons, especially large guns and the branch of the army that uses them.
