cannon はイタリア語 cannone「大きな管」からフランス語を経て英語へ入った語。もとはラテン語 canna「葦・管」、さらにギリシャ語 kanna にさかのぼり、「筒のようなもの」から「大砲」の意味になった。関連語は cane, cannonade。
Cannon came into English through French from Italian cannone, meaning "large tube." That goes back to Latin canna, "reed" or "tube," and earlier Greek kanna. The word originally referred to something pipe-like, and later came to mean a large gun because of its long hollow shape. It is related to cane.
