howitzer の語源・成り立ち Etymology
howitzer はドイツ語 Haubitze、さらにチェコ語 houfnice にさかのぼり、語源の houf は「群れ・隊」を表します。ドイツ語 Haufen も同根で、点ではなく集団に向けて山なりに弾を落とす砲だから、榴弾砲という意味になるのです。
Howitzer came into English from German Haubitze, which came from Czech houfnice. The older Czech root houf meant a "crowd" or "troop," related to German Haufen. The word first referred to a weapon used against groups of soldiers, and later became the name of this type of artillery gun.
