abbey は古フランス語 abeie を経て、後期ラテン語 abbatia「修道院長のいる場所」に由来します。核の abba はアラム語で「父」を意味し、abbot や abbess も同根です。つまり abbey は、信仰共同体を導く「父」のもとに集まる場だと分かります。
