beholder は古英語 behealdan に由来する behold に、行為者の -er が付いた語です。hold や uphold と同根で、もとは「しっかり目を留めて保つ」感覚なので、ただ見る人でなく注意深く見つめる者という含みが出ます。
Beholder comes from behold with the agent suffix -er. Behold goes back to Old English behealdan, related to hold, and originally had the sense of keeping one's eyes fixed on something. Because of that, beholder suggests not just someone who sees, but someone who looks with attention.
