ギリシャ語 em-「中へ」+ pathos「感情・苦しみ」に由来し、ドイツ語 Einfuhlung「感情移入」の訳語として英語に入った語。sympathy, apathy と同じ pathos 系です。
Empathy comes from Greek parts meaning "in" and "feeling" or "suffering." It entered English as a translation of the German word Einfuhlung, which means "feeling into." It belongs to the same word family as sympathy and apathy.
