understanding の語源・成り立ち Etymology
understanding は under + stand + -ing に見えますが、古英語 understandan の under は単なる「下」ではありません。物事の中に立って全体をつかむ感覚から「理解」が生まれ、stand や withstand と同じ「立つ」の根が通っています。
Understanding comes from Old English understandan. In this old verb, under did not simply mean "below" as it does today; it suggested being among or within something in order to grasp it fully. Over time, the word developed the sense of mentally grasping a matter as a whole. It shares its root with stand and withstand.
