etiquette の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 étiquette から入り、もとは「札・貼り紙・ラベル」という意味でした。宮廷で作法を書いた札を指したことから「礼儀作法」へ意味が広がり、ticket も同じ古仏語系の仲間なので、ふるまいの“表示札”と考えると納得できます。
Etiquette came into English from French étiquette. It first meant a tag, label, or written notice. In royal courts, the word was used for cards or notes that showed proper forms of behavior, and from there it came to mean rules of polite conduct. Ticket comes from the same French family of words.
