protocol は中世ラテン語 protocollum を経て、ギリシャ語 prōtokollon にさかのぼり、proto-「最初の」+ kolla「のり」から成ります。巻物の最初に貼る要約紙を指したため、そこから「冒頭の取り決め」→「正式な手順」の意味になりました。関連語は prototype、collagen。
`Protocol` goes back through Medieval Latin `protocollum` to Greek `protokollon`. It is made from `proto-` (first) and `kolla` (glue), because it originally meant the first sheet glued onto a scroll as a summary.
