解説 Definition
海軍で、通常は大佐より上、少将より下に置かれる階級や称号を指す名詞。日本語では「代将」と訳されることが多い。また、ヨットクラブなどでは組織の代表者・会長の肩書きとしても使われ、文脈によって軍事用語かクラブの役職かを判断する必要がある。

Commodore probably came into English through Dutch kommandeur, from Old French comandeor, meaning "commander." It belongs to the same family as command and commander, going back to Latin mandare, "to order" or "entrust." The word was used for someone in charge of ships, and from there it became a fixed naval rank.
