Historically is built from historical plus -ly, and the deeper source is Greek historia, meaning "inquiry," "investigation," or "knowledge gained by asking." That Greek word came from a root meaning "one who knows" or "wise person," and it also gave English history and historian. The meaning moved from the act of finding out facts to the record of past events. From there, historically came to mean "in a way connected with history."
