「hazardous」は古フランス語 hasard（おそらくアラビア語 al-zahr「さいころ」）に、形容詞化の -ous が付いた語。hazard や haphazard も仲間で、もとは賭けの“運まかせ”だったものが、予測できず危ないという感覚から「危険な」になった。
Hazardous comes from hazard plus the adjective ending -ous. Hazard came into English through Old French hasard, possibly from Arabic al-zahr, meaning "dice." Because dice games depended on chance, the word moved from the idea of risk in gambling to the broader sense of danger or uncertainty. A related English word is haphazard.
