quince は中英語 quynce を経て古フランス語 coing、ラテン語 cotoneum / cydonium malum、さらにギリシャ語 kydonion malon に由来します。もとは「キュドニアのリンゴ」で、地名が果物名になった語です。関連語は Cydonia。
Quince came into English through Middle English and Old French, from Latin cotoneum or cydonium malum, and ultimately from Greek kydonion malon. The Greek name meant "apple of Kydonia," a city in Crete. So the fruit name began as a place-name and then became the regular word for the fruit. A related historical name is Cydonia.
