relation は relate（関連づける）が分かれば入りやすい語で、「何かと何かを結びつけた結果」が relation(s)。単数なら個別の関係、複数の relations は人間関係・外交関係など“複数のつながり全体”を指しやすいです。public relations, international relations の形でよく見ます。relationship よりやや広く客観的で、個人的で深い結びつきは relationship が出やすい、と対比で覚えると整理しやすいです。

ラテン語 relatio（持ち帰ること、報告）から。re-（再び・戻す）＋ latus（運ばれた、ferre の過去分詞）が語源。関連語：relate（関連づける）、correlation（相関）。「持ち帰って結びつける」という原義が人や物事の「つながり・関係」を表すようになった。
Relations comes from Latin relatio, which first meant a bringing back or a report. It is linked to ferre, meaning to carry, with re- giving the idea of back or again. From the idea of bringing things together or connecting them in thought, it developed into the sense of links between people or things. Related English words include relate and correlation.
