日本語由来なので、まず「意味を無理に推測する語」ではなく「そのまま文学用語として覚える語」と位置づけるとよい。haiku と対で覚えるのが最も強いフックで、haiku は 5-7-5、tanka は 5-7-5-7-7 と後ろに 7-7 が足されて少し長い。英語では write/compose a tanka, read classical tanka のように、詩を作る・味わう文脈で出やすい。tank や tanker に見た目が似ていても無関係。
Remember it together with `haiku`. A `tanka` is like haiku's longer relative, so if haiku feels short, tanka feels extended. Also be careful not to connect it with `tank` or `tanker` just because the spelling looks similar.

tanka は日本語の 短歌 の借用で、tan「短い」+ ka「歌」に分けられ、文字通り「短い歌」を意味する。和歌や歌謡の 歌 と同じ要素をもち、五・七・五・七・七という短い定型が、そのまま語の中に刻まれている。
Tanka was borrowed from Japanese 短歌. It is made from tan, meaning "short," and ka, meaning "song" or "poem." The word entered English with that literal sense of a short song, and it kept its strong link to the traditional Japanese poetic form. The second part ka is the same element seen in waka.
