サイダーはリンゴの果汁を発酵させて作られたアルコール飲料で、主にイギリスやヨーロッパで広く親しまれています。日本ではサイダーという言葉は炭酸飲料全般を指すこともありますが、英語圏では一般的にリンゴ酒を意味します。
Cider is a drink made from the juice of apples. In Britain it normally means an alcoholic fermented drink, while in North America apple cider may also mean unfiltered, nonalcoholic apple juice, with hard cider specifying the alcoholic kind.

In North America, cider or apple cider can also mean a cloudy, unfiltered, nonalcoholic apple drink, so hard cider clearly identifies the alcoholic version. For an ordinary sweet carbonated drink, use soda, pop, or soft drink rather than cider.

English cider came through Old French cidre from Late Latin sicera, a term for an intoxicating drink. The Latin word ultimately goes back to Hebrew shēkār, meaning a strong or fermented drink. In medieval French, the word became associated particularly with a drink produced from apples, and that specialized sense passed into English. Thus its history begins with a broad term for fermented liquor but narrows to the apple-based beverage familiar today.
