Definition
A moccasin is a soft shoe, traditionally made of leather, originally associated with many Native American peoples. In modern use, it can also mean a simple slip-on shoe in a similar style.
Memory Tip
Remember this as the name of a specific kind of shoe, like `boot` or `sneaker`, but more traditional. Picture a soft leather shoe that wraps the foot closely. That image helps keep it separate from general leather shoes or indoor slippers.

Etymology
Moccasin was borrowed into English from an Algonquian language of North America, with forms such as Proto-Algonquian *maxkeseni and related Ojibwe makizin. It is mainly a loanword rather than a word built from smaller English parts. The term was taken over with the sense of a foot-covering made from soft material, and it stayed close to that original meaning. Related forms survive in several Indigenous languages.
