scoring は score「点をつける・得点する」に -ing が付いた形で、score は古ノルド語 skor「刻み目・切れ込み」に由来します。もとは棒に刻み目を付けて数える感覚で、score や underscore を思うと「点を記す」から今の意味へつながります。
Scoring consists of score and the suffix -ing, with the silent final e removed. Score comes through Old English from Old Norse skor, meaning a notch or incision. Notches were used to keep numerical records, which led to senses involving a count or total and later to points gained in games. The modern sports verb score therefore retains the older connection with recording a number.
