17世紀ケンブリッジの馬貸しトマス・ホブソンに由来する。客は厩舎の入口にいる馬を借りるか、借りないかしか選べなかったとされ、見かけだけの選択を表す語になった。この背景が、現代の比喩的な用法にも残っている。
The phrase comes from Thomas Hobson, a horse owner in Cambridge. Customers reportedly had to take the horse nearest the door or take none at all.
