drat は 19世紀英語で、God rot!「神罰が下れ」の rot をやわらかく言い換えた罵り語とされる。rot は古英語 rotian「腐る」にさかのぼり、相手が腐れろという毒気を弱めて「ちくしょう」程度にした形だ。rotten や rot が同根。
