Memory Tip

in New York の形で覚えましょう。

Connect New York with York, an English place name: the word new distinguishes the American name from the older English one. The name was given in honor of the Duke of York when the English took control in 1664. In everyday speech, New York often means New York City, especially in references to tall buildings, but it can also mean the state. Use New York City or New York State when the distinction matters, and learn the location pattern “live in New York.”

Etymology

In 1664, the English took control of the Dutch settlement called New Amsterdam and renamed it New York in honor of James, Duke of York, who later became King James II. York was already the name of a historic city and county in England, and New marked the American place as a namesake. The name was subsequently applied both to the colony and state and to the city now commonly called New York City.
