prentis の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 aprentis(学ぶ者)の語頭が落ちた中英語形。ラテン語 apprehendere(つかむ・理解する)が語源で、ap-(~へ)+ prehendere(つかむ)に分解できる。関連語: apprentice(徒弟)、comprehend(理解する)。知識を「つかみ取る」人という原義が見習いの意味になった。
Prentis is a Middle English shortened form of apprentice, ultimately from Old French aprentis, “one who learns.” That form belongs to the word family of apprendre, “to learn,” historically connected through Latin apprehendere, “to grasp” or “understand.” The loss of the initial vowel produced forms such as prentis and prentice, while apprentice became the standard modern spelling.
