retinue は古フランス語 retenue に由来し、さらにラテン語 retinere「引き留める」へさかのぼります。re-「後ろへ」＋tenere「つかむ・保つ」なので、本来は「手元に置かれた人々」という発想です。そこから主君に付き従う従者集団の意味になり、同根語に retain と tenure があります。
"Retinue" came into English from Old French retenue and goes back to Latin retinere, meaning "to hold back" or "keep." That Latin verb is built from re- and tenere "to hold," a root also seen in "retain" and "tenure." The idea was of people kept close at hand, and it later developed into the sense of attendants who go with an important person.
