解説 Definition
粉末状の鉱物や金属などを高温で加熱し、粒子を結合させてできた固まりや材料を指します。特に製鉄では、粉鉱石を焼き固めた焼結鉱を指すことがあります。
Sinter is a solid material made by heating small pieces of metal, stone, or other matter until they join together without fully melting. It is mainly used in engineering, manufacturing, and geology. The word is usually technical.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
sinter は工程そのものの sintering「焼結」と近いですが、名詞では「焼結してできたもの」を指すと押さえると正確です。powder を完全に溶かすのではなく、熱で粒同士を結びつけて固めた材料を思い浮かべます。sinter plant や iron ore sinter のように出たら、「粉を熱で固めた焼結体／焼結鉱」という場面を思い出すと忘れにくいです。
Remember the family: `sinter`, `sintering`. The `-ing` form is the process, so the base noun often points to the material or lump that comes out of that process. Keep it apart from similar industrial words like `cinder` or `clinker`, which appear in nearby contexts but are different things.

Sinter was borrowed into English from German Sinter, a word for mineral matter hardened by heat or deposited in a crust. English mainly treats it as a loanword rather than a word that can be clearly broken into smaller parts. From that origin came sinter and sintering for the idea of particles being joined by heat without being fully melted.
