Stop in is a phrasal verb formed from stop and the adverb in. Stop continues Middle English stoppen and the Old English element -stoppian within a West Germanic word group; the proposed borrowing from Vulgar Latin *stuppare is disputed. Stop had developed the traveler’s sense “make a halt or stay” by the early eighteenth century. In comes from Old English in and expresses being or moving inside. In the established modern phrase, these elements combine to denote entering or visiting a place briefly.
