解説 Definition
車などが進行方向を反対に変えるため、U字形に曲がること。方針の完全な転換にも使う。
A turn in which a vehicle follows a curved path to travel in the opposite direction. It can also mean a complete reversal of a policy or position.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
U-turn は、車の軌跡を上から見てアルファベットの U を描き、来た方向へ戻る場面をそのまま記憶すると簡単です。交通では make a U-turn「Uターンする」、U-turns are not allowed「Uターン禁止」の形が定番です。さらに、会社や政府が以前と正反対の方針へ変える場合にも make a U-turn on a policy と言えます。少し方向を調整する turn ではなく、進行方向や方針をほぼ反対へ切り替えることだと押さえると定着しやすいです。
