a moot point は、状況が変わって実際上の重要性がなくなったり、今となっては論じても意味がなかったりする問題を指す表現。単に「議論の余地がある点」というより、「もはや争っても実益のない点」という含みで使われることが多い。
A moot point is an issue that is no longer important in a practical way, so discussing it will not change anything. In everyday English, it often means a question that is not worth arguing about anymore. In some formal contexts, it can also mean a point that is still open to debate.

a moot point の語源・成り立ち Etymology
moot は古英語 gemot「集会・会議」に由来し、a moot point は本来「会議で討議すべき点」でした。そこから「議論の対象」という意味を経て、特に米用法では、状況が変わって議論しても実際の効果がない点を指すようになりました。語源は「集まって論じる点」でも、今のこの表現では「論じても無意味な問題」に結びつけて覚えるとよいです。
Moot comes from Old English gemot, meaning "meeting" or "assembly." So a moot point originally meant a point to be discussed at a meeting, not a pointless one. The older sense still appears in moot court, and it is historically related to the idea behind meeting.
