moot は古英語 gemot「集会・会議」に由来し、a moot point は本来「会議で討議すべき点」。ge-「ともに」+ mot「集まり」の感覚を知ると、moot court や meeting と響き合い、「まだ決着せず論じる価値がある点」だと見えてきます。
Moot comes from Old English gemot, meaning "meeting" or "assembly." So a moot point originally meant a point to be discussed at a meeting, not a pointless one. The older sense still appears in moot court, and it is historically related to the idea behind meeting.
