If something is debatable, people can reasonably disagree about it. The word is used for ideas, decisions, or statements that are not clearly true, right, or certain. It often suggests that more discussion or evidence is needed.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
debate（議論する）が見えればまず覚えやすい語です。debatable は「debate の対象にできる」→「議論の余地がある」。正しいと確定している感じではなく、賛否が分かれそう・判断がまだ割れる、という含みがあります。語尾の -able は readable, acceptable と同じく「〜できる」の型。That point is debatable. のような形で覚えると定着しやすいです。controversial ほど強く対立的ではなく、「そこはまだ議論できる」という少し控えめな響きです。
