地球上に存在するすべての人類、人間全体を表す集合名詞。人間の種全体、すなわちホモサピエンスを指す。
Humankind means all human beings considered as one group. It is often used in formal or thoughtful writing when talking about human society, history, or the future of people in general.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
human + kind と分けて見ると覚えやすい語です。ここでの kind は「親切」ではなく a kind of animal の kind、つまり「種類・種」のこと。だから humankind は「人という種全体」= 人類。humanity も近いですが、こちらは「人間性・人道」の意味にも広がるので、純粋に集合としての人類を言いたいときは humankind が分かりやすいです。mankind より中立的に使いやすく、the future of humankind / all humankind の形で覚えると定着します。
