ahimsa はサンスクリット語 a-「否定」+ himsa「傷つけること」から成り、文字どおり「害さないこと」を表します。himsa や himsaka も同根で、ただ暴力を避けるだけでなく、傷つける意思そのものを抑える思想だと語源から分かります。
"Ahimsa" comes from Sanskrit, from "a-" meaning "not" and "himsa" meaning "injury" or "harm." So at its root, it means "non-harming." Over time it came to express not only avoiding violence in action but also avoiding the wish to hurt. Related Sanskrit forms include "himsa" and "himsaka."
