覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
民族名・言語名では通常Aleutと大文字で書き、Aleut people、Aleut communities、Aleut languageという連語で覚える。アリューシャン列島の先住民族と結び付け、Aleutianは島々や地域を表す形と区別する。現代では自称Unangan(複数形Unangax̂)も使われるため、文脈に応じた名称に注意する。
Link Aleut with the Aleutian Islands and learn it through the combinations “Aleut people,” “Aleut communities,” and “Aleut language.” This geographical link keeps the meaning precise: it refers to an Indigenous people of the island region, not simply to any Alaskan resident. Notice the grammatical contrast between Aleut, used for the people, their language, or as an attributive label, and Aleutian, commonly used for the islands and the wider region. Unangan, with the plural form Unangax̂, is an important self-designation, so the preferred name may vary with the community and context.

aleut の語源・成り立ち Etymology
Aleut(アレウト)はアリューシャン列島の先住民族名。ロシア語алеутを経由し、語源はチュクチ語のaliat(島)やアレウト語の自称allíthuhに由来する説がある。「島の民」という意味が根底にあり、地名Aleutian Islandsの元となった。
English Aleut came through Russian алеут, transliterated as aleut, during Russian contact with the Indigenous peoples of the Aleutian region. The deeper source is disputed: proposals connect it either with a Chukchi word associated with islands or with a form related to the people’s own designation. Because these explanations are not certain, the secure historical point is the Russian route into English. The term later also supplied the base of the geographical adjective Aleutian.
